My dog loves to retrieve and never wants to stop. He gets really pushy and keeps pushing the ball at me when I want to stop. How do I end the game?

This is a very common problem. Dogs have loads of energy and we are usually the ones that need to end the game. This is what I do. I teach a word or phase that means we are finished playing. I say "That'll do" (a sheep herding term) and then give him a handful of treats (jackpot). I then ignore him and go about my other activities.

Step-by-step instructions to teach "That'll Do":
1. When you are ready to quit, stand or sit very still with your clicker ready to click. Say "That'll do".
2. As soon as you see your dog starting to drop the ball or showing signs of stopping the game - click.
3. Toss your dog a handful of treats, scattering them if not too messy. Picking these up is a fun game for him all by itself. While he is occupied, simply take the ball away and put it in a safe place until next time you want him to play with it.

If your dog repeatedly pushes the ball at you, turn your back and pay no attention to him until he stops begging to play. Be very careful not to resume playing the game whenever he is being pushy.
